Aircraft Maintenance works on Aircrafts

What is the work of Aircraft Mechanic’s, technician’s and trainee’s in Aviation industry? It is not practical to describe all the practices and procedures that the AMEs, technicians and trainees doing on the aircrafts. These procedures will vary from aircraft to aircraft, engine to engine and are all covered in the various manuals available for each particular aircraft, engine and its accessories. However, it is worthwhile to describe a few of the typical repair and maintenance practices which may be employed by these people under certain conditions.

Maintenance covers both the work that is required to maintain an engine and its systems in an airworthy condition while it is installed in an aircraft and the work that is required to return an engine to airworthy condition once it has been removed from an aircraft. There are two maintenance activities which are employed in the aircraft, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.

Scheduled maintenance includes the periodic and recurring inspections that must be made in accordance with the engine sections of the aircraft maintenance schedule. These checks range from inspections which do not entail opening of cowls to more elaborate checks within specified time limits, usually calculated in aircraft flying hours or cycles.

Unscheduled maintenance covers work necessitated by occurrences that are not normally related to time limits, eg. Bird ingestion, a strike by lightning, or heavy landing. It may also result from malfunctions, troubleshooting, or scheduled maintenance inspections.

Maintenance functions also fall into two categories of line maintenance and heavy maintenance. The scope of line maintenance consists of removal and installation of external components and engine accessories as well as hot section inspection. Other work considered to be line maintenance is removal and replacement of malfunctioning line replaceable units. All procedures are considered line maintenance that do not fall under heavy maintenance.

Heavy maintenance entails removal, installation, and repair of components normally considered beyond the capabilities of the average line maintenance facility which performed at an overhaul.
